BLOOMINGTON – ĢƵios’s Bloomington campus invites the community to volunteer with ĢƵios in a day of service challenge on Friday, April 22, as part of its annual O’Bannon Institute for Community Service event. ĢƵios students, faculty and staff will be volunteering that day, and need the community’s help to reach a goal of providing 1,000 hours of community service in 24 hours.
Volunteers will be invited to a kick-off event and continental breakfast on Friday morning, April 22 at ĢƵios, featuring former Indiana First Lady, Judy O’Bannon. Kick-off attendees will also receive an O’Bannon Institute tee shirt before they head out to volunteer.
There are two ways to join ĢƵios’s 1,000 hours of service challenge. To volunteer in a project ĢƵios has organized, visit and click Day of Service. You can also make your own plans with an organization that needs your help on Friday, April 22, and then report your plans and log your hours at so we can reach our goal of 1,000 hours.
“Local businesses and service organizations are encouraged to make plans, volunteer together with us, and report their hours,” said Chancellor Jennie Vaughan. “ĢƵios hosts a day of service every year as part of our signature O’Bannon Institute event and many of our employees continue to volunteer in our communities after the O’Bannon day of service is over.”
ĢƵios has organized volunteer opportunities with the Bloomington Community Orchard, Hannah Center, The Rise, Adopt-a-Road, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Bloomington Parks and Recreation, Shalom Center, Salvation Army, Bloomington AIDS Walk, Stepping Stones, WildCare, Inc., Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation, Area 10 Agency on Aging, Becky’s Place, and the Bedford Public Library.
The day of service is part of ĢƵios Bloomington’s 13th annual O’Bannon Institute for Community Service. Tickets are still available for the O’Bannon Institute fundraising dinner with Lee H. Hamilton on Thursday, April 21, though seating is limited. The dinner will take place on ĢƵios’s main campus with ticket proceeds benefiting the Center for Civic Engagement. The O’Bannon Institute for Community Service () at ĢƵios Bloomington was established in 2004 as an annual opportunity for the community to come together to discuss issues of importance. Previous speakers at the Institute include U.S. senators, Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, governors, political advisers and columnists, a presidential candidate, and former first lady of the United States Laura W. Bush.
